Herzegovina wine and Balkan gastronomy programmes for agencies and incentive planners
travellige, a Sarajevo-based, trade-only DMC, runs wine and gastronomy programmes in Herzegovina for travel agencies, tour operators and incentive planners, built around the native Žilavka and Blatina grapes, family wineries and the region's food.

A Mediterranean wine region most travellers have not heard of
Herzegovina, the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has a warm Mediterranean climate and stony karst soils along the Neretva valley. Wine has been made here for centuries. The signature grapes are Žilavka, a fresh, mineral white, and Blatina, a soft red that is traditionally grown alongside other varieties because it needs a partner for pollination.
Most wineries are family businesses, which suits small groups and incentive programmes: tastings take place in cellars, courtyards and vineyards, often with the winemaker present and with local food served alongside.
What goes into a wine and gastronomy programme
- Tastings at several family wineries around Mostar and Čitluk, with Žilavka, Blatina and Vranac
- Lunch or dinner pairing local wine with Herzegovinian prosciutto, cheese matured in sheepskin, grilled lamb and river trout
- A visit to Trebinje in eastern Herzegovina, which combines easily with Dubrovnik
- Mostar's old town and the Old Bridge, Blagaj and the Kravica waterfalls between tastings
- Cooking demonstrations or a market visit for gastronomy-focused groups
- In Sarajevo, a food walk through Baščaršija: ćevapi, burek, Bosnian coffee and sweets
- Harvest experiences in September and October, depending on each winery
Combining wine with the coast and Sarajevo
Herzegovina sits between the Adriatic and Sarajevo, so a wine programme fits naturally into a longer trip. Groups arriving in Dubrovnik or Split can spend two or three nights in Mostar before continuing to Sarajevo, or return to the coast. Trebinje, in the far south-east of Herzegovina, is close to Dubrovnik and works as a half-day or full-day addition to a coastal stay.
For incentive groups we keep transfers short, plan tastings in the late morning and late afternoon to avoid the summer heat, and always provide transport so that nobody has to drive after a tasting.
The incentive format
Our 4-day Herzegovina wine incentive is built for corporate groups. A typical structure:
- 01
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at Mostar, Dubrovnik or Split, transfer to Mostar and a welcome dinner with local wines.
- 02
Day 2: Mostar and the wineries
A private walk in Mostar's old town, then tastings at two family wineries with a vineyard lunch.
- 03
Day 3: Herzegovina by day, gala by night
Blagaj and Kravica, an afternoon at leisure and a gala dinner with a winemaker-led pairing.
- 04
Day 4: Departure
Breakfast, optional stop in Počitelj, and transfer to the airport.
Questions about wine programmes
What are the main wines of Herzegovina?
Žilavka, a native white grape, and Blatina, a native red. Vranac is also widely grown in Herzegovina and neighbouring Montenegro.
Can a Herzegovina wine programme be combined with Dubrovnik?
Yes. Trebinje and the Mostar wine area combine well with a Dubrovnik stay, and many groups arrive or depart through Dubrovnik airport.
Is it suitable for an incentive group?
Yes. Family wineries suit groups that want a personal experience with the winemaker. We match winery size to group size and plan transport so nobody needs to drive.
Can non-drinkers take part?
Yes. We build in food, sightseeing and non-alcoholic options so the programme works for everyone in the group.
