How groups fly into Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina has four international airports. Sarajevo (SJJ) carries most international traffic and is the natural entry point for tour groups. Tuzla (TZL) is a low-cost base used mainly by the diaspora in north-east Bosnia. Banja Luka (BNX) serves the north-west, again mostly diaspora traffic. Mostar (OMO) is a small seasonal airport and the closest gateway to Medjugorje and Herzegovina.

There are no direct long-haul flights. Groups from the USA, China, South-East Asia, Korea, Japan and India connect through Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Dubai, or fly into Zagreb, Belgrade, Dubrovnik or Split and continue by road. For many multi-country programmes an open-jaw routing, for example arriving in Sarajevo and leaving from Dubrovnik, works best.

The tables below summarise the network as reported by the airports, airlines and regional aviation press up to early October 2026. Treat them as a planning guide, not a schedule. Frequencies are approximate and many routes are seasonal.

Hub connections for long-haul groups

Istanbul is the strongest single connection into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Turkish Airlines flies to Sarajevo year-round and connects to a wide long-haul network, so groups from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Korea, Japan, India and the USA can usually reach Sarajevo on one ticket with one stop. Pegasus and AJet add frequencies from Sabiha Gökçen.

The Lufthansa Group hubs, Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich, each have daily or twice-daily flights to Sarajevo throughout the year. They suit groups from the USA, Japan, Korea, China and India travelling with Star Alliance carriers.

Dubai works in summer through flydubai, with Emirates connections, and is a good option for South and South-East Asian groups. In winter the Dubai service is reduced.

For multi-country programmes, consider the neighbouring gateways. Zagreb and Belgrade have year-round Qatar Airways flights and short connections or road transfers into Bosnia. Dubrovnik and Split have large seasonal networks and are about 2 to 2.5 hours by road from Mostar and Medjugorje; Dubrovnik is about 4.5 hours from Sarajevo.

Seasonality and what it means for group planning

Capacity into Sarajevo peaks from June to September, when Gulf, Turkish resort and Western low-cost flights all operate together. August is the busiest month. This is also when Gulf families travel, so hotel space in Sarajevo is tight in July and August.

The shoulder months, April, May and October, are the best windows for European, Turkish and Asian touring groups. The main hub carriers and most low-cost routes are still flying, while hotel availability is better.

Winter 2026/27 is thinner than usual. Ryanair leaves Sarajevo for the winter, LOT suspends Warsaw and Eurowings pauses Stuttgart, while Turkish Airlines trims to about 12 weekly flights. Winter programmes such as ski trips, Sarajevo city breaks and Christmas markets should rely on Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian, SWISS and Wizz Air.

Summer 2027 is expected to be stronger. Ryanair has announced a larger Sarajevo programme, easyJet enters the market with Geneva and Basel, and Wizz Air's new winter routes grow to three weekly. Announcements are not schedules, so confirm before you build a series around them.

Gulf capacity is fragile. In 2026 the regional conflict led to the cancellation of Qatar Airways' summer Sarajevo flights and cuts by other Gulf carriers. For Gulf groups we recommend flexible contracts and a backup routing via Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

Are there direct flights to Sarajevo from the USA, China or Malaysia?

No. As of October 2026 there are no direct long-haul flights to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Groups connect once, most commonly via Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Dubai.

Which airlines fly to Sarajevo all year?

Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet from Istanbul, Lufthansa from Frankfurt, Austrian from Vienna, SWISS from Zurich, Croatia Airlines from Zagreb and Air Serbia from Belgrade all operate year-round, along with some Wizz Air and Eurowings routes. Schedules change, last checked October 2026.

Does Ryanair fly to Sarajevo in winter?

Not in winter 2026/27. Ryanair suspends all Sarajevo flights from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 and plans to return in summer 2027.

Which airport is best for Medjugorje pilgrimage groups?

Mostar is the closest airport, with seasonal Italian flights and Irish pilgrimage charters. Many groups use Split or Dubrovnik, about 2 to 2.5 hours away by road, or Sarajevo, about 2.5 hours away.

Can we arrive in Sarajevo and depart from Dubrovnik?

Yes. Open-jaw routings are common for Balkans circuits. We plan the route so the group ends near the departure airport and build in time for the border crossing into Croatia.
