What we handle in Albania
Albania is the part of the Balkans many clients have not yet seen, and it fits naturally at the southern end of a route that starts in Sarajevo or Dubrovnik. We book Albanian hotels, coaches, local guides and entrances and run them under the same contract as Bosnia and the other countries on the route.
Typical programmes enter Albania from Montenegro at Shkodër, spend two to four nights covering Tirana and one or both of the Ottoman-era towns of Berat and Gjirokastër, and either fly out of Tirana or continue east to Ohrid in North Macedonia or north to Prizren in Kosovo.
Key places for groups
- Tirana: the capital's main square, museums and cafés; the arrival and departure point for most programmes.
- Krujë: the castle and old bazaar above Tirana, an easy half-day.
- Shkodër: Rozafa castle and the lake, the first stop after crossing from Montenegro.
- Berat: the town of white Ottoman houses, UNESCO-listed together with Gjirokastër.
- Gjirokastër: stone houses and a large hilltop castle in the south.
- Butrint: the archaeological park near Sarandë, UNESCO-listed, for longer southern routes.
Sample routings combined with Bosnia
| Route | Length | How it runs |
|---|---|---|
| Sarajevo, Mostar, Kotor, Shkodër, Tirana | 8 to 9 days | Bosnia and Montenegro, then south into Albania; fly out of Tirana |
| Tirana, Berat, Ohrid, Skopje, Prizren | Part of a 10 to 12 day loop | Albania with North Macedonia and Kosovo, joined to Sarajevo by flight or coach |
| Dubrovnik, Kotor, Tirana, Berat | 6 to 7 days | Coastal route for groups that already know Bosnia |
Border and entry notes
Albania is outside the EU and the Schengen area. From Bosnia, the coach route runs through Montenegro, so a programme includes two crossings: Bosnia to Montenegro and Montenegro to Albania. If your group holds Turkish, Chinese or Saudi passports, note that Montenegro has announced visa requirements for these nationalities from 1 November 2026; we can route through Kosovo or use a flight instead. Check current rules; last checked: October 2026.
Albania's own entry rules are separate from Bosnia's and Schengen's, so we confirm requirements for each nationality at booking.
Best season and gateway airport
Spring and autumn are best for walking Berat, Gjirokastër and the archaeological sites. July and August are hot inland and busy on the coast.
Tirana is the main gateway. From September 2026 flynas has operated a Riyadh, Sarajevo and Tirana triangle, which shows the potential for Gulf open-jaw programmes; schedules change, so check before you sell.
Who Albania suits and how we sell it
Repeat Balkan travellers who already know Croatia and Bosnia often ask for Albania next, and it works well as the new element in a second programme for the same client base. Culture groups come for Berat, Gjirokastër and Butrint; walking groups for the mountains of the north.
For Turkish and other Muslim groups, Albania sits naturally on the Ottoman-heritage route alongside Prizren, Skopje and Ohrid. For groups that cannot easily enter Montenegro, we reach Albania through Kosovo instead, or fly between Sarajevo and Tirana via a hub.
Albanian roads have improved, but mountain sections remain slow. We keep coach days realistic and avoid long drives after late arrivals.
Albania questions from travel agencies
Can you combine Albania and Bosnia in one tour?
Yes. The usual route goes through Montenegro, or through Kosovo for groups that cannot enter Montenegro. Everything is on one contract.
How many nights does Albania need in a Balkan tour?
Two nights cover Tirana and Berat or Shkodër. Four nights add Gjirokastër and Butrint.
Is Albania suitable for Muslim and Turkish groups?
Yes. Berat, Gjirokastër and Krujë fit well into Ottoman-heritage routes, combined with Kosovo, North Macedonia and Bosnia.
Can a group fly into Sarajevo and out of Tirana?
Yes. Open-jaw routes like this avoid long return drives. We suggest the best combination when we quote.
Do you provide guides who speak our clients' language in Albania?
We can keep one tour leader in English, German, Turkish, Arabic or Italian for the whole route and add local Albanian guides at Berat, Gjirokastër and Butrint where they add depth.
