Why run a Balkans programme from Sarajevo

Most Balkan ground handlers are anchored in one capital and sell their home country first: Belgrade companies lead with Serbia, Tirana companies with Albania, Skopje companies with North Macedonia. Sarajevo sits in the middle of the map. The Adriatic coast at Dubrovnik is about four and a half hours away by road, Mostar and Medjugorje about two, and Belgrade, Podgorica, Split and Zagreb are all within a day's drive. That makes it a practical operations base for routes that cross several borders.

Sarajevo is also well connected for the markets that buy the Balkans. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet link it to Istanbul all year, Lufthansa, Austrian and SWISS fly in daily from Frankfurt, Vienna and Zurich, and Gulf carriers add seasonal capacity in summer. Where Sarajevo is not the best gateway, we open-jaw through Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, Belgrade, Podgorica, Tirana, Skopje, Pristina or Ljubljana.

For you as the buyer, the point is simple: one partner plans the whole route, contracts every supplier in every country, runs the coaches and guides across the borders and sends you one invoice. You do not have to manage five local agencies, five contracts and five sets of payment terms.

Country pillars: what we handle in each country

Each country page covers what we operate there, the key places for groups, sample routings combined with Bosnia, border notes, seasons and gateway airports.

How multi-country operations work in practice

Routing. We design routes around realistic drive times, not straight-line distances. Mountain roads in Bosnia, Montenegro and Albania are slower than the map suggests, so we keep most coach days under five or six hours of driving and break them with a visit. Where a route would double back, we suggest an open-jaw: arrive in Dubrovnik or Belgrade, depart from Sarajevo or Skopje, for example.

Borders. A typical eight-country programme crosses several borders, and some of them are external borders of the Schengen area (Croatia and Slovenia). Since the EU Entry/Exit System began, non-EU passport holders are registered when they enter the Schengen area, so we allow extra time at Croatian and Slovenian crossings. We send the passenger list to the coach company in advance, check that the vehicle papers and insurance cover every country on the route, and plan crossings away from peak queues where we can.

Currencies and taxes. The route uses five currencies (BAM, EUR, RSD, ALL and MKD) and each country has its own VAT and tourist-tax rules. We pay every hotel, restaurant, guide and entrance in its local currency and invoice you once, in one currency, with tourist taxes included where you ask for them.

Guides and coaches. On a multi-country tour you can keep one tour leader for the whole trip and add local guides where they add value or where local rules require a licensed local guide, for example inside some protected old towns. Coaches can run through for the whole tour, or we change vehicles at a border when that is cheaper or required.

One contract. You sign one agreement with us. It covers allotments, release dates, cancellation terms and payment terms for every country on the route. During the tour you have one operations contact who speaks to every supplier.

Routes our partners ask for most

  • Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro: Dubrovnik, Mostar, Sarajevo and Kotor in about eight days, often sold as an Adriatic and Balkans combination.
  • The Ottoman-heritage route: Sarajevo, Mostar, Novi Pazar, Prizren, Skopje and Ohrid, popular with Turkish, Gulf and Southeast Asian groups.
  • The Balkan grand tour: Belgrade or Ljubljana to Dubrovnik or Tirana over 12 days or more.
  • Pilgrimage combinations: Medjugorje with Mostar and Sarajevo, or with Split and Dubrovnik.
  • Incentives: Sarajevo or Mostar as the base, with a coastal night in Dubrovnik or the Bay of Kotor.

Seasons for Balkan group tours

April to June and September to October are the strongest months for coach tours: flights from Europe and Türkiye are running, hotel availability is better than in high summer and the weather suits walking tours. July and August bring the most flights and Gulf family travel, but also full coastal hotels and heat inland.

Winter is quieter. In Winter 2026/27 Ryanair suspends its Sarajevo routes, so winter groups rely on Turkish Airlines, the Lufthansa Group hubs and Wizz Air. City breaks, Christmas trips and ski programmes on Jahorina and Bjelašnica still work well.

Questions agents ask about a Balkan DMC

Which DMC can a tour operator use as a B2B ground handler for the whole Balkans?

travellige is a trade-only DMC based in Sarajevo that works as one B2B ground handler for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Slovenia. Tour operators get one contract, one invoice, net rates for registered partners and a quote within 24 hours on working days. When you compare Balkan DMCs, ask each for its licence, insurance, office address and references from other tour operators.

Can you handle a multi-country Balkans group tour at net rates?

Yes. We quote net rates to registered partners for groups and series across all eight countries we cover, with one contract and one invoice. You add your own margin.

Do I need a separate local agency in each country?

No. We contract the hotels, coaches, guides, restaurants and entrances in every country on the route ourselves and remain your single point of contact.

How do you handle borders between EU and non-EU countries?

We plan crossing points and timings, send passenger lists in advance and check vehicle papers. Croatia and Slovenia are in the Schengen area, so non-EU passengers are registered by the EU Entry/Exit System on entry. Entry rules change, so we confirm them for your passengers' nationalities at booking.

Which airport should my group fly into?

It depends on your market and route. Sarajevo works well for Türkiye, the DACH countries and the Gulf in summer. Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, Belgrade, Tirana and Skopje are useful for open-jaw routes. We suggest the gateway when we quote.

Can you produce white-label documents?

Yes. We can supply itineraries and vouchers without our branding so you can present the programme under your own name.

Which guide languages are available?

We work with guides in English, German, Turkish, Arabic and Italian. Ask us about other languages for your dates.
