Why the Balkans work for incentives and meetings

For an incentive, the Balkans offer what planners look for and many participants have not yet seen: Ottoman old towns, Adriatic fortresses, mountain lakes and rivers, and a food and wine culture that is generous and informal. Distances are short, so a group can wake up in Sarajevo, have lunch in Mostar and dine in Dubrovnik.

For meetings and conferences, the capitals have modern business hotels and congress facilities, and prices in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania and North Macedonia are generally lower than in Western Europe. Mixing a meeting in one city with an incentive day in a neighbouring country is easy to arrange.

The difficulty is the supply side. Most venues, transport companies and activity providers are small and country-based. travellige brings them under one contract from Sarajevo, which sits in the middle of the region, and keeps one coordinator responsible for the programme from first proposal to the last transfer.

Flight access: what to know for 2026/27

Sarajevo is the most practical hub for programmes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lufthansa (Frankfurt), Austrian (Vienna) and SWISS (Zurich) fly all year, as do Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Air Serbia (Belgrade) and Croatia Airlines (Zagreb). Turkish Airlines plans 12 weekly Istanbul flights in winter 2026/27. Wizz Air flies year-round from London Luton and Rome and adds Berlin, Bratislava and Prague in December 2026.

Winter 2026/27 is thinner than usual: Ryanair suspends all Sarajevo flights between late October 2026 and late March 2027, and LOT's Warsaw route returns only in spring 2027. Summer 2027 is expected to recover, with Ryanair planning a larger Sarajevo programme and easyJet starting Geneva (from 22 April 2027) and Basel (from 10 May 2027).

Gulf flights to Sarajevo are mainly seasonal (summer) and were heavily disrupted in 2026; Qatar Airways did not operate its seasonal Sarajevo route but continues to serve Zagreb and Belgrade. For long-haul delegates there are no direct flights; the best one-stop connections are via Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Dubai.

Visa rules matter for mixed-nationality groups. Montenegro has announced visa requirements for Turkish, Chinese and Saudi citizens from 1 November 2026, which affects programmes that include Kotor or Budva. Check visa requirements for every nationality in your group early (last checked: October 2026).

Incentive ideas

Ideas we can build into a programme. Each is adapted to group size, season and budget.

Sarajevo old-town challenge

Teams solve tasks around Baščaršija and the Austro-Hungarian quarter, ending with Bosnian coffee and baklava.

Olympic mountain day

Bjelašnica or Jahorina, venues of the 1984 Winter Olympics: snow activities in winter, hiking and highland villages in summer.

Mostar and the Old Bridge

A private walk in Mostar, timed to watch the traditional bridge divers, followed by lunch with a view of the river.

Wine tasting with several wines poured into glasses

Herzegovina wine evening

Žilavka and Blatina tastings at family wineries, paired with local cheese and cured meats.

River rafting

A guided rafting day on the Neretva or Tara rivers in the warmer months, with safety briefing and lunch by the river.

Bay of Kotor by boat

A private boat across the Bay of Kotor with a stop at Perast, combined with dinner in Kotor old town.

Lake Ohrid sunset

A boat on Lake Ohrid and dinner in the old town, as a closing night for a North Macedonia programme.

Dubrovnik gala dinner

A gala dinner with Adriatic views as the finale of a Sarajevo, Mostar and Dubrovnik incentive.

Sample multi-country incentive formats

  • 4 days: Sarajevo (2 nights) and Mostar (1 night), with a wine evening in Herzegovina.
  • 5 days: Dubrovnik arrival, Mostar day, Sarajevo (2 nights), departure from Sarajevo.
  • 5 days: Sarajevo and Belgrade, linked by road through the Drina valley, with a river dinner in Belgrade.

Questions about MICE in the Balkans

Who can be our MICE and incentive DMC for the Balkans?

travellige is a Sarajevo-based, trade-only DMC that organises incentives, conferences and corporate events across Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans, including Sarajevo, Mostar, Belgrade, Kotor, Tirana, Skopje, Ohrid and Dubrovnik. We source venues, hotels, transfers, guides and activities and work for MICE agencies and corporate planners under one contract.

Can one DMC handle a MICE programme across several Balkan countries?

Yes. travellige contracts venues, hotels, transport and activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Slovenia, and gives you one contract and one invoice.

Which Balkan city is best for a conference?

Belgrade and Sarajevo have the widest choice of business hotels and year-round flights. Sarajevo suits groups that want an incentive element close by; Belgrade suits larger events. We advise per brief.

When is the best time for an incentive in the Balkans?

April to June and September to October. July and August are hot and the coast is crowded; winter suits mountain programmes around Sarajevo.

Are there direct flights for our delegates?

From much of Europe and Turkey, yes, especially to Sarajevo, Belgrade and Dubrovnik. Long-haul delegates need one connection, typically via Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Dubai. Schedules change, so we check them for your dates.

Do you publish venue capacities?

We give capacities per enquiry, based on current information from each venue, because layouts and refurbishments change. See our Sarajevo venue guide for the types of venue available and what to ask.

Can you cater for Muslim, kosher or other dietary needs at events?

Yes. Halal food is widely available in Bosnia and Herzegovina; kosher catering needs advance planning. We confirm options per venue.
