Why Sarajevo for meetings
Sarajevo is compact. Most hotels, the old town and the main venues lie along one valley, so delegates can walk between the conference hotel, dinner in Baščaršija and the Austro-Hungarian centre. The airport is close to the city and has year-round connections through Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich, Belgrade and Zagreb.
The city also gives an incentive element without extra travel: a guided walk through five centuries of history, a cable car ride up Mount Trebević, or a day on the 1984 Olympic mountains.
Types of venue in Sarajevo
Business hotels with conference floors
International chain and local hotels with plenary rooms, breakout rooms and in-house catering. The usual choice for conferences of up to a few hundred delegates.
Exhibition and congress complex
Skenderija, the city's large cultural, sports and exhibition centre, suits fairs, exhibitions and bigger events that need open floor space.
Historic venues
Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman-era buildings can host receptions, concerts and official events. Private hire depends on each institution's rules at the time.
Old-town restaurants and courtyards
Traditional restaurants in and around Baščaršija for welcome dinners and group meals. Some do not serve alcohol, which suits some groups and not others.
Panorama and hillside venues
Restaurants on the hills around the city, and the Trebević cable car area, for sunset receptions with views over the valley.
Olympic mountain hotels
Hotels on Bjelašnica and Jahorina for retreats, off-sites and winter incentives, within about an hour of the city.
What to ask before you book a Sarajevo venue
- What is the current capacity for my layout (theatre, classroom, cabaret, banquet), and when was the room last refurbished?
- Is daylight available in the plenary room, and can it be blacked out for projection?
- What audio-visual equipment is included, and can an external AV company work in the venue?
- Are simultaneous interpretation booths possible, and is there space for them?
- Is alcohol served? If not, can we bring in a bar service, or should we choose another venue for the gala?
- Is the venue step-free for delegates with reduced mobility, including toilets and stage access?
- Where can coaches stop and wait? Some old-town streets are pedestrian-only.
- What are the deposit, attrition and cancellation terms, and the latest date for final numbers?
- Is there a noise curfew for evening events, especially in residential areas?
- For mountain venues: are roads and access guaranteed in snow, and is there a backup plan for weather?
Combining Sarajevo with the region
Many groups combine a meeting in Sarajevo with one or two days elsewhere: Mostar and Herzegovina (about 2.5 hours by road), Dubrovnik (about 4.5 hours) or Belgrade. We handle the transport and contracts for the whole programme.
Questions about venues in Sarajevo
What is the largest conference venue in Sarajevo?
For large events, the main options are the larger business hotels and the Skenderija complex. Capacities depend on layout and current configuration, so we confirm them per enquiry with each venue.
Can we hold a gala dinner in a historic building in Sarajevo?
Sometimes. Historic buildings set their own rules on private events, and these can change. We check availability and conditions for your date.
Can you organise a site inspection in Sarajevo?
Yes. We arrange inspection visits to hotels and venues and accompany you or your client.
Is Sarajevo suitable for a winter incentive?
Yes. Bjelašnica and Jahorina, used in the 1984 Winter Olympics, are about an hour from the city and offer snow activities from roughly December to March, depending on conditions.
