What we handle in North Macedonia
North Macedonia is far enough from Sarajevo that it usually appears as the last leg of a longer route: groups arrive in Sarajevo or Belgrade, travel south through Serbia's Sandžak or Kosovo, and fly home from Skopje or Ohrid. We contract hotels, coaches, guides, boat trips and winery visits and include them in the same contract and invoice as the rest of the tour.
The country works especially well for Turkish and other Muslim groups following the Ottoman heritage of the Balkans, for culture groups interested in Byzantine churches around Ohrid, and for wine and gastronomy groups in Tikveš.
Key places for groups
- Skopje: the Stone Bridge, the Old Bazaar, the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and the fortress.
- Matka Canyon: boat trips and a lakeside lunch, half an hour from Skopje.
- Ohrid: the old town, the church of St John at Kaneo above the lake, and Samuel's fortress. Lake Ohrid and its region are UNESCO-listed.
- Bitola: the Ottoman bazaar, the pedestrian Širok Sokak and the ancient city of Heraclea Lynkestis nearby.
- Tikveš: the main wine region, with winery visits and tastings for groups.
- Tetovo: the Painted Mosque, a short drive from Skopje.

Border and entry notes
North Macedonia is outside the EU and the Schengen area. Coach routes from Bosnia cross at least two other countries first, usually Serbia or Montenegro and then Kosovo or Albania, so each extra crossing needs time in the plan.
If the route uses Kosovo, think about the direction of travel. Travellers who enter Kosovo from North Macedonia or Albania may not be able to leave directly into Serbia, because Serbia does not treat those crossings as legal entry points. We plan the route so that this never becomes a problem. Check current entry rules for each nationality; last checked: October 2026.
Best season and gateway airports
April to June and September to October suit city and culture programmes. Ohrid is also busy and attractive in July and August, when the lake is at its best. Harvest time in September is ideal for Tikveš winery visits.
Skopje and Ohrid are the two international airports. Ending a route there with a flight home, rather than driving back north, saves a full day.
Who North Macedonia suits and how we sell it
Turkish groups find a strong Ottoman story in Skopje's Old Bazaar and in Bitola, and a natural continuation of Sarajevo and Prizren. European culture groups come for Ohrid's churches and frescoes. Wine and gastronomy groups add Tikveš, often combined with Herzegovina's wineries earlier in the tour.
Because the drive from Sarajevo is long, we usually end the route in North Macedonia rather than return north. If your group must start and end in the same city, we look at a flight between Skopje and Sarajevo via a hub as an alternative to two long coach days.
Skopje and Ohrid are about three hours apart by road, so we normally split the stay: one or two nights in Skopje and two nights in Ohrid.
North Macedonia questions from tour operators
How do you combine North Macedonia with Bosnia?
As an open-jaw route: arrive in Sarajevo, travel south through Serbia's Sandžak and Kosovo or through Montenegro and Albania, and depart from Skopje or Ohrid.
Is North Macedonia a good fit for Turkish groups?
Yes. Skopje's Old Bazaar and mosques, Bitola and Ohrid fit naturally into Ottoman-heritage programmes with Bosnia and Kosovo.
Can you include winery visits in Tikveš?
Yes, with tastings and lunches for groups. Alcohol-free alternatives can be arranged for other group members.
Is everything on one contract?
Yes. North Macedonia is contracted and invoiced together with the other countries on your route.
