Why a Sarajevo-based ground handler

Sarajevo is where most groups to Bosnia and Herzegovina arrive and spend the most nights. A ground handler based in the city knows which hotels can take a coach at the door, which restaurants can seat 50 people for a halal lunch at short notice, when the old town is too crowded for a walking tour and how long it really takes to get from the airport to Baščaršija on a Friday afternoon.

We are based in Sarajevo, so we see the hotels and venues ourselves, meet groups at the airport and solve problems on the spot. Because we also run programmes across the Balkans, we can turn a Sarajevo city break into a Bosnia round trip or a multi-country tour without you changing supplier.

Sarajevo also has a story that works for very different markets. Turkish groups come for the Ottoman bazaar and the mosques. Gulf families come for green mountains and cool summer evenings. German and Austrian groups come for the Austro-Hungarian quarter, 1914 and the 1990s. Jewish heritage groups come for the Sarajevo Haggadah and the Sephardic story. Our job is to build the right version of the city for your clients.

What we handle in Sarajevo

  • Meet-and-greet and transfers at Sarajevo airport, the bus and train stations and hotels, by car, minibus or coach.
  • Hotels in the old town, the Austro-Hungarian centre and the business district around Marijin Dvor, plus mountain hotels on Jahorina, Bjelašnica and Trebević.
  • Walking tours with local guides in English, German, Turkish, Arabic and Italian, planned around prayer times and opening hours.
  • Reserved entrances and timed visits, for example at the Tunnel of Hope, Vijećnica, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the Trebević cable car.
  • Restaurants for groups, including halal menus, traditional ćevapi and burek lunches, and private dinners with music.
  • Conference venues, hotel meeting rooms, AV, interpreting and delegate transfers.
  • Incentive activities: private dinners in historic buildings, cooking workshops, rafting, mountain lunches and city treasure hunts.
  • Day trips and overnight extensions to Mostar, Konjic, Visoko, Travnik, Jajce, Višegrad and Srebrenica.

Getting groups to Sarajevo

Sarajevo International Airport handled 2,226,692 passengers in 2025. Its busiest routes are Istanbul, Vienna and Zagreb. Year-round, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet connect to Istanbul, Lufthansa to Frankfurt, Austrian to Vienna, SWISS to Zurich, Croatia Airlines to Zagreb and Air Serbia to Belgrade. Wizz Air flies to Rome and London Luton all year and adds Berlin, Bratislava and Prague from December 2026.

In summer, flydubai increases its Dubai flights and Saudi and Kuwaiti carriers add seasonal routes. Ryanair runs a large summer network but suspends Sarajevo between 25 October 2026 and 27 March 2027, and easyJet starts Geneva and Basel flights in spring 2027.

There are no direct long-haul flights. Groups from the USA, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and India connect via Istanbul, Frankfurt, Vienna, Zurich or Dubai. Schedules change every season, so check before you quote. Last checked: October 2026.

Hotels and logistics in the city

Sarajevo's old town is mostly pedestrian, so coaches drop and collect groups at set points on the edge of Baščaršija and along the river. We choose hotels with that in mind: old-town boutique hotels are charming but small and usually not reachable by coach, while larger four- and five-star hotels in the centre and around Marijin Dvor handle full coaches and conference groups more easily.

Traffic is heaviest on weekday afternoons and on Fridays around midday prayers near the old town. We schedule airport transfers and walking tours around those peaks, and for the Tunnel of Hope we often plan the visit on the arrival or departure day because it is close to the airport.

For Gulf families we contract apartment hotels and family rooms, and private vehicles with drivers rather than coaches. For pilgrim, study and budget groups we use centrally located three- and four-star hotels with group menus.

A sample three-night Sarajevo programme

A starting point we adapt to each market, group size and season.

  • Day 1: arrival at Sarajevo airport, meet-and-greet, a stop at the Tunnel of Hope on the way into town, hotel check-in and a welcome dinner near the old town.
  • Day 2: morning walking tour of Baščaršija, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the Latin Bridge and the Austro-Hungarian quarter; lunch; afternoon on the Trebević cable car or at Vrelo Bosne; free evening.
  • Day 3: full-day trip to Mostar along the Neretva via Konjic and Jablanica, with Blagaj or Počitelj on longer days; dinner back in Sarajevo.
  • Day 4: Vijećnica or a Jewish heritage visit, then transfer to the airport, or continue by coach to Mostar, Višegrad or the Adriatic coast.

Faith, prayer times and Ramadan

Mosques, Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals and a synagogue stand within a short walk of each other in central Sarajevo, which is why interfaith and heritage groups value the city. We plan around religious timetables: Friday midday prayers for Muslim groups, Mass at the Catholic cathedral for pilgrim groups travelling on from or to Medjugorje, and Sabbath for Jewish heritage groups.

During Ramadan we schedule visits for the cooler morning hours, arrange iftar dinners for groups and choose hotels that can serve suhoor. Ramadan and the Eid holidays move about eleven days earlier each year, so we check the dates when we quote.

What different markets want from Sarajevo

MarketWhat to build in
TürkiyeOttoman Sarajevo, the mosques and bazaar, Turkish-speaking guides, a day in Mostar, short breaks of three to four nights
GulfPrivate drivers, family accommodation, Vrelo Bosne, Trebević and mountain day trips, halal dining, Arabic-speaking guides, July to August and Eid dates
DACHHistory from 1914 to the 1990s, study-trip meetings, German-speaking guides, combination with Mostar and the coast
ItalySarajevo as an extension to Medjugorje pilgrimages, Catholic and interfaith heritage, Italian-speaking guides
Malaysia and IndonesiaIslamic heritage, halal meals, prayer stops, Sarajevo as the start of a Balkan circuit via Istanbul

Seasons and events

Spring and autumn are ideal for walking tours and day trips: April, May, September and October bring mild weather and good flight choice from Europe and Türkiye. Summer is the busiest time, especially in July and August, when Gulf families arrive and the Sarajevo Film Festival fills hotels in August. Book peak-season allotments early.

Winter turns Sarajevo into a ski base. Jahorina and Bjelašnica, the 1984 Winter Olympic venues, are under an hour away. Winter flights are fewer in 2026/27, so we plan winter groups around Turkish Airlines, the Lufthansa Group and Wizz Air connections.

Conferences and incentives in Sarajevo

Sarajevo works for small and mid-sized conferences, association meetings and incentives. Hotels in the centre offer meeting rooms and ballroom space, and historic buildings such as Vijećnica can host receptions and gala dinners subject to availability and approval. For incentives we combine the city with Mostar, the mountains or a night on the Adriatic coast.

We handle venue sourcing, delegate transfers, AV, interpreting, dinners and activities under one contract. See our Sarajevo venue guide for more detail.
