Five centuries of Jewish life in the Balkans

Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 settled across the Ottoman Balkans, and a community was established in Sarajevo in the sixteenth century. Ashkenazi Jews followed in the Austro-Hungarian period. Sarajevo's Jewish community lived alongside Muslim, Orthodox and Catholic neighbours for centuries, a history that is central to the city's identity.

A Jewish heritage programme here tells that story through living places, not only museums: synagogues, a hillside cemetery, the old Jewish quarter of Dubrovnik and the streets of Dorćol in Belgrade.

Highlights

  • The Sarajevo Haggadah: an illuminated Sephardic manuscript from fourteenth-century Spain, kept at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is shown under strict conservation conditions, and viewing arrangements are set by the museum, so we confirm them for your dates.
  • The Old Synagogue in Baščaršija, dating from the sixteenth century, which today houses the Museum of the Jews of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • The Ashkenazi Synagogue on the bank of the Miljacka, completed in 1902 and still used by the community. Visits are arranged in advance.
  • The Old Jewish Cemetery on the slopes above Sarajevo, one of the largest historic Jewish cemeteries in Europe.
  • Dubrovnik's synagogue in the old town, one of the oldest synagogues in Europe still in use, with a small museum.
  • Belgrade: the Sukkat Shalom Synagogue, the Jewish Historical Museum and the Dorćol neighbourhood where Belgrade's Sephardic community lived.

Planning notes

  • Shabbat and Jewish holidays: sites and community buildings may be closed or have restricted access. We schedule visits and travel days around them.
  • Kosher meals: availability is limited in the region and must be arranged well in advance. We advise per group on what is realistic.
  • Access and security: visits to active synagogues and community buildings are booked in advance and may involve identity checks.
  • Guides: English, German and Italian-speaking guides with knowledge of the region's Jewish history; other languages on request.
  • Combinations: the theme combines naturally with Ottoman heritage in Sarajevo and with a Dubrovnik coastal stay.

Questions about Jewish heritage tours

Can our group see the Sarajevo Haggadah?

The Haggadah is kept at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina under conservation conditions, and the museum decides how and when it is shown. We check the current arrangements for your dates and plan around them.

Can you arrange kosher meals in Sarajevo, Dubrovnik and Belgrade?

Kosher catering in the region is limited and needs advance planning. Tell us your requirements early and we will confirm what can be arranged for each city.

How long should a Jewish heritage tour of the Balkans be?

Two to three days cover Sarajevo. Six to eight days allow Sarajevo, Dubrovnik and Belgrade with comfortable travel days.

Can you plan around Shabbat?

Yes. We avoid travel and site visits on Shabbat where the group wishes and choose hotels within walking distance of what you want to see.
